A new respiratory pathogen has emerged in the canine infectious respiratory complex “CIRD”.

Owners should be alerted to a continuous soft cough with or without a nasal discharge. The virology indicates a 2 – 4 day incubation period with preclinical viral shedding and can last 7 – 10 days shedding the virus.

This is a community acquired disease with the following states described as enzootic (constantly occurring in a given community) CT, NY, NJ, PA, FL, CO.

The virus remains viable on hands and clothing for 12 – 24 hours. Effective sanitation with disinfectants is necessary.

There is a vaccine which produces strong antibody response by two weeks. Vaccinated animals have less illness, are not as contagious and are at less risk for pneumonia. Addressing the symptoms early is key to a satisfactory resolution.
