Growing up on a farm in rural Indiana, it was a natural progression that Dr. H. would seek a profession in animal husbandry. While attending Purdue University, he was inducted as a member of Phi Zeta Scholastic Honorary. In 1966, he received his degree as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Purdue. From there, he was one of seven who was accepted nationwide for an internship at prestigious Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston.

Dr. H. moved to Wilton in 1967 where he joined the practice at WHFA with Peter Olsen, D.V.M. In 1976 he became the single proprietor.
